Zirconium is a ductile, lustrous, off-white metal at room temperature, but hard and brittle at lower purities. It is highly flammable in powder form, but not in solid form. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion by acids, alkalis, brines and other substances, but is soluble in hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, especially when fluorine is present. Zirconium alloyed with zinc is magnetic at temperatures below 35 K (-238 ℃, -396.67 ℃F). The melting and boiling points of zirconium are 1,855 ℃ (3,371 ℃F) and 4,371 ℃ (7,900 ℃F), respectively. Zirconium has an electronegativity of 1.33, ranking it fifth from the bottom of the d-zone elements, ahead of hafnium, yttrium, lanthanum, and actinium. At room temperature zirconium crystallizes in a hexagonal densest packing called -zirconium, while at 863℃ Celsius it transforms into body-centered cubic crystalline -zirconium. Zirconium will remain in the -zirconium state until the temperature rises to the melting point.
